Cookies and storage

ComboShelf sets no cookies of its own
Not one. There is no session, no login and no visitor identifier, so there is nothing for a cookie to hold. What the site does keep is two things you asked for, stored on your own computer in your browser's local storage: which keyboard you want to see, and your progress in the practice drill.
What is stored on your device
| Key | What it holds | How long |
|---|---|---|
cs.prefs | Which keyboard you asked to see, Windows or Mac. Nothing else, and nothing that identifies you. | Until you clear it |
cs.drill | Your progress on the practice page: for each set you have practised, how many runs you have done and your best scores, and for each shortcut, how often it was asked and how often you got it right. Written only once you run the drill. Nothing that identifies you, and never a key press. | Until you clear it, or press "Clear my progress" on the practice page |
Local storage is not a cookie, but the rules that cover cookies in the United Kingdom and the European Union cover it too: both are information stored on your own equipment. The reason we may store these without asking is narrow and specific: each exists only to give back something you asked for, the keyboard you chose and the progress of the drills you ran. Nothing else is stored, and nothing is read for any other purpose.
Whatever you press on the practice page is compared inside the page and then forgotten: no key press is written to storage or sent anywhere. What is kept is the tally described above, and it stays in your browser. A challenge link from the drill carries its order code and score after the # in the address, and a sheet built by ticking rows carries its list of rows the same way; your browser leaves that part out when it asks for a page, and the site stores nothing about either.
Advertising cookies
No adverts run on this site, so no advertising cookie is set by anyone. If that changes, this page will describe it before it does.
Website statistics
Cloudflare Web Analytics counts page views. It is cookieless by design: it sets nothing on your device, stores no identifier, and cannot follow you to another site. There is nothing to opt out of and nothing to clear.
How to clear what is stored
- Chrome and Edge: Settings, then Privacy and security, then Third-party cookies, then See all site data and permissions. Find this site and delete its data.
- Safari: Settings, then Privacy, then Manage Website Data. Find this site and remove it.
- Firefox: Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Cookies and Site Data, then Manage Data.
To delete only the drill's progress, press "Clear my progress" on the practice page. You can also block storage for this site entirely. Everything here still works: the site will simply ask your browser which keyboard you are on each time, rather than remembering what you told it, and the drill will not remember your progress.
